ORLAN (Saint-Étienne, 1947)

She is one of the most internationally influential French artists. She is not governed by any material, technology or artistic practice. She uses sculpture, photography, performance, video, 3D, video games, augmented reality, artificial intelligence and robotics (she has created a robot in her own image that speaks with her voice), as well as scientific and medical techniques such as surgery and biotechnology, to question the social phenomena of our time from a critical distance. He has created the Art-Accès Revue on minitel. ORLAN founded and organised the Lyon International Symposium on Performance and Video.

ORLAN constantly and radically changes the given, breaking conventions and prefabricated thinking. It opposes natural, social and political determinism and all forms of domination, male supremacy, religion, cultural segregation and racism.

1974-2011 MesuRages, ORLAN creates a new unit of measurement the “ORLAN-BODY” and measures with his body the Pompidou Centre, Paris, France, the Guggenheim Museum, New York, USA, the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, USA, the Vatican, Rome, Italy.

2005 ORLAN is invited to an ISCP residency, New York, USA, by the AFAA (Association Française d’action artistique).
2006 ORLAN was honoured to be invited to a residency at the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles, USA, as a researcher and artist, where she exhibited.
2007 Installation The Harlequin Coat, at the crossroads of art and biotechnology where ORLAN grows her cells, UWA, Western Australian University, Perth, Australia.
2008 ORLAN: Post identity strategies, Tallinn Art Hall, Tallinn, Estonia.
2010 ORLAN is awarded the knighthood medal of the National Order of Merit by the Minister of Culture Frédéric Mitterrand.
2011 Video retrospective: ORLAN fait son cinéma at the Miami Cinémathèque, Art Basel Miami, USA.

2013 ORLAN receives the E-reputation award for the most observed and commented artist on the web. La libertad desollada, 3D video showing ORLAN’s flayed body in 3D.
2014 Peking Opera Masks Self-Hybridizations, Facing Design and Augmented Reality, to deregulate misogynistic norms that prevent women from performing in Peking operas and creates their augmented reality avatar.
2015 Experimental Game, Video game in which the spectator can play with ORLAN’s avatar where playing is not killing.
2016 Striptease Tangible in Nanosequences, a performance in collaboration with Mael Le Mée, in which she cultivated her cells and her microbiota circulated among the spectators.
2017 ORLAN receives the Female Excellence Award for all her work as an artist from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Body of Proof exhibition at MACBA in Buenos Aires, Argentina. ORLAN retrospective at the MACRO in Rome, Italy. ORLAN in capitals at the Maison européenne de la photographie in Paris, France, curated by Jean Luc Monterosso.
2018 ORLAN receives the 100 Heroines Award from The Royal Photographic Society. Artistes et Robots exhibition at the Grand Palais, presentation of ORLANoïde, a robot with ORLAN’s face that speaks with her voice, has a text and movement generator and AI.
2019 ORLAN receives the special Woman of the Year award from Prince Albert II of Monaco ORLAN is named Professor Emeritus at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, Italy. ORLAN receives the Golden Panda Photography Awards of the Chengdu Award Image Museum, Chengdu, China. ORLAN SANTA-ORLAN at Ceysson & Bénétière Gallery, New York, USA. 2021 ORLAN writes his autobiography ORLAN, STRIP-TEASE : ALL ABOUT MY LIFE, ALL ABOUT MY ART published by Gallimard. ORLAN receives the François Morellet Prize for this autobiography. ORLAN represents France in the European Union Pavilion at the Beijing Art Biennale (China).
