Antón Lamazares (Lalín, Pontevedra, 1954)
Painter and sculptor born in Galicia. Between 1976 and 1979, he received a scholarship from the Provincial Council, the town hall of Lalín and the Ministry of Culture. In 1978, he moved to Madrid, where he maintained a close friendship with the painter Alfonso Fraile, the gallery owner Juana Mordó and the art critic and poet Santiago Amón.
From those years onwards, he had great visibility on the Barcelona art scene: he was an artist at the Sala Gaspar and the Galeria Miguel Marcos, with which he held numerous exhibitions, until the end of the 90s.
He stood out as a member of the Grupo Atlàntica, in the 80s. Between 1990 and 1991, he settled in Paris, with a scholarship from the Cité des Arts. In 1997, he carried out a specific project, Gracias do lugar, for the Galician Centre for Contemporary Art (CGAC).From those years onwards, he had great visibility on the Barcelona art scene: he was an artist at the Sala Gaspar and the Galeria Miguel Marcos, with which he held numerous exhibitions, until the end of the 90s.
In 2002, his work was selected, along with Saura, Chirino and Oteiza, for the Spanish Art Abroad program of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In 2010, the University of Santiago de Compostela awarded him the “Gold Badge” and the Xunta de Galicia, one of the “Castelao” medals. A year later, the Pontevedra Museum organized a grand exhibition on his work. In 2024, his last exhibition took place at CGAC, a project that encompasses his entire career, with the title Índa é Dia 1973-2023.
He has written several books and has held a significant number of individual and collective exhibitions. His work is in the permanent collection of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, in addition to being included in other important museums and private collections around the world.
Last year marked the 30th anniversary of the Antón Lamazares exhibition in Raíña Lupa, with which Rocio Santa Cruz inaugurated the first gallery in Paris.
