Antón Lamazares

BIO

Antón Lamazares (Lalín, 1954) is a painter and sculptor born in Lalín. He was awarded a scholarship in 1976 and 1978 by the Diputación de Pontevedra and the City Council of Lalín. Later, in 1980, he obtained a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture.

In those years, he began to make himself known within the Atlántica group. Lamazares stood out for his painting on poor and waste supports, used wood, cardboard, etc., surfaces on which he made an automatic drawing, using expressionism in an ironic way. Later on, evolved to varnished pieces, a constant that he continues to use in his current work of large formats and minimalist vocation, very influenced by Arte Bruto, in which he establishes games of contrasts and even certain informalist influences Tàpies. Between 1990 and 1991 he moved to Paris with a grant from the Citè das Arts.

In 1997, he carried out a specific project, Gracias do lugar, for the Dobre Espacio of the Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea (CGAC), where he presents in a pantheistic way the fragmentation of the painting-landscape thanks to the absorption of a multitude of green colors that reflect the lyricism of the Galician rural world. In 2002 his work was selected, along with that of other artists such as Saura, Chirino and Oteiza, for the Spanish Art Abroad program of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In 2010 the University of Santiago de Compostela awarded him the Gold Badge and the Xunta de Galicia awarded him one of its Castelao medals. A year later, the Museum of Pontevedra organizes a large anthological exhibition of his work.

He has written several books and held a significant number of solo and group exhibitions. His work is included in the permanent collection of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, as well as in other important museums and private collections around the world.
