Lúa Ribeira (As Pontes, 1986)

Of Galician origin, his work questions the concepts of acceptability and the dynamics of domination determined by the dominant culture. He conceives photography as a tool to generate encounters and break down structural barriers between individuals and communities. Her practice is characterised by its collaborative nature, extensive research and immersive approach to the issues she addresses. He is interested in using the photographic medium as a means to create encounters that build relationships and challenge structural separations between individuals and communities.

In her career she has received several awards, including the Firecracker Fellowship for Women in Photography and the Jerwood/Photoworks Award, and has been nominated for the Foam Paul Huf Award and Prix Pictet 2019.

Her work has been included in publications such as Firecrackers: Female Photographers Now (published by Thames & Hudson, 2017), as well as in Raw View magazine’s ‘Women looking at Women’ (2016).

His first monograph, entitled Subida al Cielo, was published by Dalpine, in 2023. The book includes five series made between 2016 and 2020, in which he approaches themes historically related to documentary photography and representation. One of these series is ‘Los afortunados’, which takes place in Melilla, and follows the journey of a group of young people from Morocco seeking to reach Europe. In Galicia, the artist’s homeland, she produced the series ‘Aristocrats’, in collaboration with a religious institution that supports a community of women with cognitive disabilities.

She has taken part in numerous international exhibitions, both solo and group. Among others, it is possible to mention the Beijing Biennial of Photography, Tabacalera (Madrid), Fundación Luis Seoane (A Coruña) and the International Center of Photography (New York).

Lúa Ribeira has been part of the Magnum Agency since 2018 as a nominee, becoming an associate member from 2020 and a full member from 2023. Since 2024 she works exclusively with RocioSantaCruz gallery.
