Antón Lamazares. DE LA NIT QUE NO ACABA (E NON ACABA A NOITE)
Originally from Galicia and with a strong link to Barcelona, Antón Lamazares has created throughout his career a poetic prose of visual character of high voltage, deep and personal.
The artist’s creative practice is based on an ontological inquiry into concepts such as being, memory, spirituality and matter. The rich rural and poetic tradition of his native country is the recurrent subject and context of his work, which he reinterprets symbolically to transfer it as a common good.
In his creations, Lamazares composes a plastic landscape in the form of a syntax that has as subject the place and, as predicate, the non-place, that is, the inquiry of a nomadic being on the existence, in personal time of himself and others, in search of the transcendental.
His practice, then, is situated in a singular intersection between the earthly and the spiritual, between the material and the symbolic. His work moves between painting, sculpture and engraving, with special emphasis on the use of humble materials such as wood and cardboard.
The choice of these elements is fully conscious. With it, he revalues a material culture in the key of artistic practice and endows it with new connotations: he transforms the material, with layers of pigments, varnishes, oxides and engravings, and arrives at shiny, rough or worn surfaces as a denouement. As Ángela Molina points out, “in the face of all this material richness, what our painter is, is a povera”.
This serves as a basis to build a dialogue between the material and the metaphysical, in his search for immanence, for that which has in itself its permanence and principle, in the Kantian concept.
The persistent presence of unconventional spellings, of titles in Galician, Latin or invented languages, such as his Alfabeto Delfín, points to a scenario in which language transcends the verbal to become a poetic gesture.
Large formats characterize his corpus. As Gloria Moure states, “they are concretions of a desirous love for matter and of a solitary ambition to intervene in it, choosing it and listening to it, which manage to make the evident and the hermetic flow in an inseparable alliance, so that the interior and timeless poetic memory comes to be configured in object and image”.
