The identity of the famous militia woman photographed by Campañà has been discovered.

During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) Antoni Campañà took one of the most iconic photographs of the conflict: a militia woman, until recently anonymous, holding the CNT flag on one of the barricades built in Barcelona. Ninety years after the photograph was taken, her identity is discovered: Anita Garbín, a militiaman exiled in 1939 who never knew that her image would become one of the most recognisable images of the conflict. The photograph is part of the exhibition “Icônes Cachées. Les images méconnues de la guerre d’Espagne (1936-1939)”, held at the Pavillon Populaire in Montpellier.

“La Miliciana infinita” is a documentary that will soon be broadcast on TV3, in which the entire historical study that led to the recognition of the identity of the woman portrayed by Campañà is recorded.
