LOIS PATIÑO (Spain 1983)
Lois Patiño started his studies in Madrid combining Psicology at Complutense University with cinema studies at TAI. He followed his cinema education at NYFA in New York, and in Barcelona with a Master in Documentary Filmmaking at UPF. He studied videocreation at UdK in Berlin and took workshops with artist and filmmakers such as Joan Jonas, James Benning, Donald Kuspit, Pedro Costa, Víctor Erice or Daniel Canogar.
His videos and videoinstalations have been shown in international art centres such as Centro Cultura San Martín (Buenos Aires), Konstnarshuset (Stockholm), Copperfield Gallery (London), JIFF Art Gallery (South Korea) or Galería Solar (Portugal). And in national centres as MACBA and CCCB (Barcelona), Casa Encendida (Madrid) or MARCO (Vigo).
His films have been screened at international festivals as Locarno, Toronto, Rotterdam, San Francisco, Ann Arbour, Viennale, Cinema du Rèel, Rome IFF, Media City… or in Rencontres Internationales París/ Berlín/ Madrid, which took place in Centre Georges Pompidou (París), Reina Sofía Museum (Madrid) and Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin).
Specific focuses of his work have been developed in places as the New York Film Festival (Views form the Avant Garde), Flaherty Seminar (Colgate University), BAFICI (Argentina) or Festival of Cali (Colombia). He has been invited to show his work at universities such as Harvard (Sensory Ethnography Lab), Cal Arts (L.A.), California College of the Arts, FUC (Buenos Aires) or Instituto Politécnico (Porto).
With his work “Mountain in Shadow” won prizes at Oberhausen IFF (Germany), Clermont-Ferrand (France), Bucharest Experimental FF… And at the Locarno IFF he recieved the prize for the best emerging director with his work “Costa da Morte”. This feature film also get prizes in festivals such as Jeonju IFF (South Corea), FICUNAM (México) Festival dei Popoli (Italy), Valdivia IFF (Chile) or Seville European Film Festival (Spain). His shortfilm “Night Without Distance” was at Toronto IFF, and won, among others awards, in the San Francisco IFF. His latest work, “Fajr”, made with a BBVA Foundation Fellowship, premiered at Rotterdam IFF, and won awards at Curtas Vila do Conde (Portugal) or Uruguay IFF.
