Diogo Pimentão

Mar Arza

Our proposal articulates a dialogue between two artists of the same generation: Mar Arza (Castellón, 1976) and Diogo Pimentão (Lisbon, 1973), through a reflection on their works around sculpture, using drawing and paper, as a work methodology.

Two characteristics unite the works of both artists: the use of the blank page, with which they intrigue the viewer, and repetition: Pimentão with the gesture; Arza with the technique. A type of repetition that is recurrent: every time they repeat the same thing, it is already another. In many cases they supplant the result by the method.

Both replicate their works on paper, which is their space, in three dimensions. On the walls of the stand, his works cause paper to play ambiguously at being support, material, surface and representation. Arza recounts his concepts on the blank page. Pimentão, with the fold.

Arza has been an artist at the gallery since its inception. Her work is regularly exhibited at ARCOmadrid. In this edition she does it with a SINGLE PROJECT. In 2018 she made the installation In vain, at La Virreina in Barcelona, with a project curated by Valentín Roma. In 2016, she exhibited at Santa Monica Art Center. It has been worthy of the DKV award.

Pimentão is a multidisciplinary artist well known for his works on paper and graphite. Likewise, he is characterized by experimentation with other materials and techniques, especially performance, video and photography. From two apparently simple materials such as paper and graphite, he uses optical trickery. His sculptures evoke metallic pieces from the minimal artists of the 70s. The incorporation of cement in his creative process emphasizes this link, with a nod to arte povera and conceptual art, in its most formalist current.

Coinciding with ARCOLisboa Arza presents an exhibition at the IVAM curated by Nuria Enguita. And Pimentão, a project at Casa Da Cerca, Almada, curated by Filipa Oliveira.
