ARCOmadrid 2025
RocioSantaCruz’s proposal is based on the 1980s, as this was a key moment for Spanish contemporary art and for its significance from a social and political point of view.
The core of the proposal is presented in the form of two sections and a colophon.
The first section, with a historical record, brings together essential artists in Spanish art of the last two decades of the last century: Teresa Gancedo, Antón Lamazares and Pep Duran.
The second section is situated within the framework of the research of historical Spanish photographic archives, a dynamic that distinguishes the RocioSantaCruz gallery. Specifically, a re-reading of the decade of the 80s is also proposed, from the field of the image.
In this line, works by women photographers Ouka Leele, Pilar Aymerich and Colita, who documented with great sensitivity and creativity moments of profound changes in Spanish society and culture, are presented. Their groundbreaking visions are a contribution of undeniable value to the evolution of photographic practice in our country.
This second section is completed with a dialogue with two new generation photographers: Lúa Ribeira and Toni Amengual.
To the interest in contemporary issues, such as gender, feminism and LGTBI rights, of which the three photographers were pioneers, is added the contemporary perspective of multiculturalism and other landscapes with a social profile, thus broadening the temporal and intergenerational scope of the proposal.
As a colophon, the RocioSantaCruz project is completed with works by other artists of the gallery: Oriol Vilapuig, Lluís Hortalà, Dionis Escorsa, Gonzalo Elvira, Lionel Sabatté, Jean Denant and Marina Núñez.
The common denominator of the works is the look towards the human, in hybridization with nature, and the recognition of the close relationship and mutual dependence between the two.
In the Gallery’s proposal, human dynamics are not seen in isolation, but as part of a larger ecosystem, which includes both social and cultural structures, as well as the natural environment.
Additionally, in another stand, a Solo Project by photographer Javier Inés will be presented.
