Lois Patiño and her film Samsara have won the Special Jury Prize in the Encounters section of the Berlinale, an award for the most daring cinema of the festival’s new stage. In Samsara, Patiño accompanies a Buddhist teenager on a visit to an old woman’s house to read her The Bardo Thödol, a guide to the journey between death and the next rebirth. On her last day, the young man whispers the book’s final passages in her ear, closes his eyes and meditates at her side, as she embarks on a transformative journey into what lies beyond.
