Teresa Gancedo (León, 1937)

She spent her youth in Madrid until 1960 and subsequently moved to Barcelona, where she studied Fine Arts at the Higher School of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi. In 1972, she held her first solo exhibition at the Sala Provincia de León, introduced by the poet Antonio Gamoneda. From that moment onward, she exhibited extensively in Spain and abroad. Among the highlights of her career was New Images from Spain (1980), in which she was one of a select group of Spanish artists invited to exhibit at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. In this exhibition, she showed alongside eight other Spanish artists: Sergi Aguilar, Darío Villalba, Zush, Carmen Calvo, Guillermo Pérez Villalta, Miquel Navarro, Muntadas/Serrán Pagán, and Jordi Teixidor. Her work is also represented in the museum’s collection. In 1981, the exhibition toured the Art Museum of South Texas, the Fine Arts Center in Colorado, and the Museum of Albuquerque in New Mexico. She later served as a tenured professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Barcelona. In 2018, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Castile and León (MUSAC) devoted a major retrospective to her work, on view from 27 October 2018 to 13 January 2019, curated by the museum’s director, Manuel Olveira.

Among the awards and distinctions the artist has received are:

  • 1970: She submitted her first work to a competition, receiving an Honorable Mention at the Ynglada-Guillot International Drawing Prize.
  • 1971: She won the Olga Sacharoff Painting Prize at the Salón Femenino de Arte Actual.
  • 1972: She won First Prize in Printmaking at the Higher School of Fine Arts and held her first solo exhibition at the Sala Provincia de León.
  • 1973: She received the Printmaking Prize at the International Salon of Women’s Painting, held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid.
  • 1974:She studied at the Higher School of Fine Arts, where she received the institution’s highest distinction, the School Medal, and was awarded the Second Prize in Drawing, the San Jorge Prize.
  • 1975: Joan Miró Prize.
  • 1978: She was specially invited to participate in the International Tribute to Joan Miró held in Palma. To mark the occasion, the newspaper Última Hora published a special edition featuring documentation on the invited artists.
  • 2021: La Iberoamericana de Toro.
  • 2024: Winner of the Comunidad de Madrid–ESTAMPA 2024 Acquisition Award.

RocioSantaCruz has played a key role in recovering Teresa Gancedo’s legacy. In addition to presenting her work at leading international art fairs such as ARCOmadrid, ARCOlisboa, ESTAMPA and Art Paris, the gallery showcased her most recent works in the exhibition El cuerpo de los símbolos at its Barcelona space. Her work has also been featured in several recent solo exhibitions, including Revelación (Fundació Vila Casas, 2025), Teresa Gancedo (Fundación Vayreda, 2026), and Como semilla humilde (Centro de Arte Caja de Burgos, CAB, 2026).
