The Centro de Arte Caja de Burgos (Burgos, Spain) is hosting one of the most important monographic exhibitions of Pepo Hernando (Burgos, 1950-2022) in recent years. “Every Landscape is a Metaphor” emphasizes the importance of Hernando as one of the most prolific artists from Castilla y León, showing for the first time works that have been only shown in the intimacy of his studio. Inaugurated on October 6 and on view until December 1, 2023, the exhibition brings together an important selection of his most recent production, a painting halfway between Op Art and minimalist abstraction, resulting in a delicate and ductile interweaving of shapes and colors. In the words of Javier del Campo San José, curator of the exhibition, “the echo of a repetitive, almost unconscious writing, the result of a self-absorbed meditation, is amplified by the patterns of colour. Intercalations of chromatic networks generate variations and nuance, and alter the formal convention of backgrounds and surfaces. In this way Hernando modifies the relationship of depth and perspective, giving his painting the rare quality of simultaneously perceiving flatness and volume, plasticity and solidity”.

During the last edition of Barcelona Gallery Weekend 2023 (14.09.2023 – 17.09.2023), the Fundació Vila Casas acquired the work Teoria dels cossos II, by the artist Oriol Vilapuig. In this work, the questioning of the body through plastic, artistic and conceptual reflection is superimposed on the quotation from “Teoria dels cossos” (1966) by Gabriel Ferrater.

After 4 years, the artist Jean Denant installs the work Mattes Basses in the Parc régional du haut Languedoc en pleine nature. Described by the artist himself as “a sculpture in the landscape for the sake of the landscape”, the work is part of his production in which he reflects on the rural landscape as an artistic element per se.

Curated by Maia Creus y Maria Lluïsa Faxedas, the exhibition Des de més enllà del temps de Fina Miralles presents the visual relationship between writing and the artist’s plastic production, previously published in Fina Miralles. Paraules fèrtils 1972-2017. In the words of the curators, “the figure runs through Fina Miralles’ entire pictorial corpus, with images that refer to the indigenous past common to all human beings, the presence of the biological mother or the cosmic tree, and the beings of the water; we also find a gallery of mythological spirits, from the ancestral power of the totem to the spirit of the forest, of day and night, or the flowering of the plant kingdom”.

The exhibition will be open from 14.09.2023-14.01.2023 at the Espai Volart of the Fundació Vilacasas (Barcelona).

In the Brazilian context of the São Paulo Biennial, the French artist ORLAN presents Tornar-se. the first major retrospective of her complete oeuvre in Brazil. From photographs to videos and sculptures, the exhibition curated by Alain Quemin and Ana Paula C. Simioni traces a journey from the 1960s to the present day. On view from 02.09.2023 to 28.01.2023 at SESC Avenida Paulista.

The Sala Picasso del Circulo de Bellas Artes (Madrid) is hosting one of the major retrospectives of Pilar Aymerich (National Photography Award 2021), a key figure in contemporary Spanish photography. From 19.09.2023 to 07.01.2024, the exhibition  Memoria Vivida will allow visitors to enjoy her career from the 1960s to 2007, accompanied by archive material that will provide an in-depth look at her production and context.

Exhibition curated by Neus Miró and organised by Circulo de Bellas Artes and La Fábrica; with the collaboration of Centre d’Art Tecla Sala.

The exhibition Atlas by the artist Miguel Trillo, represented by the RocioSantaCruz gallery, documents the boom of the 1980s from the perspective of urban tribes. The exhibition will be held at the Sala Concepción Arenal (Espacio Cultural Los Arenales, Cantabria) from 01.09.2023-31.10. 2023, the freedom experienced by young people during the transition to democracy can be enjoyed through three series: Asiatown, which focuses on the attitudes of the youth culture that has emerged in the mega-cities of the Asian continent; Fictions, a journey into the universe of manga, otakus and cosplayers; and Pasarela Street, snapshots of the audience at the fashion weeks held in the cities that set the trends today.

The artist Oriol Vilapuig presents the project “Formes d’oli i aigua” in the Church of Sant Joan d’Isil. Located in the emblematic setting of Pallars Sobirà, the Romanesque building houses the expansion of “Son”, Vilapuig’s intervention at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya in 2020. In both projects the artist uses the frottage technique to transfer the sculptural reliefs of different stone spikes from the 11th and 12th centuries in highly symbolic drawings.

From 07.21.2023 to 08.31.2023 – Church of Sant Joan a Isil (Alt Àneu, les Valls d’Àneu)

The artist Montserrat Soto will inaugurate the exhibition Por divina at the Palau Quintanar in Segòvia on 07.07.2023. The exhibition, which will be open from 07.07.2023 to 15.11.2023, presents a research process that brings together 15 years of work, from images and texts to photographs and sculptures. Curated by Alicia Murría, the exhibition offers a reading of the structure of the centuries based on civilisations and their preservation of the thinking of those characterised as “dominated” by “dominators”.
