“Um arquivo de nuvens encontrado”: Article in Umbigo Magazine about Andrés Galeano’s Exhibition

Sharing with you Um arquivo de nuvens encontrado, Zaida Trallero’s article for Umbigo Magazine about Andrés Galeano’s exhibition Fons perdut de núvols, at the Centre Mataró Art Contemporani and the RocioSantaCruz gallery.

“Our most frequent approach to heaven is still that of an ironic eye. We tend to look at it as a guide to the atmospheric state or as pure contemplation. Sometimes in search of transcendental thoughts or the pure and simple pleasure of looking at it.

Fons precut de núvols is an artistic investigation by Andrés Galeano (Mataró, Spain, 1980), which begins with the discovery of the 1939 book: els núvols confiscats, by J. Batlló and M. Busto. An investigation on the archive of the old Catalan Meteorological Service, kept at the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia in Barcelona. The project is presented in the form of an exhibition and an artist’s book and is exhibited in two places, in Mataró Art Contemporani and in the Rocío Santa Cruz Gallery, in Barcelona, both co-producers of the project.

Galeano’s artistic practice is part of post-photography. He stopped taking photographs to work with photographs of other people, most of them taken by anonymous amateur photographers, found at antique markets and fairs. His great collection, years of collection, is exhibited and displayed in parts of his works. Most of the images are linked to the subject that he has been investigating for years: transcendence in relation to the photographic medium, whose visual representation addresses the celestial. On this occasion, he is working for the first time with an official archive, which allows him to activate a whole series of topics already dealt with in his previous works, condensing many of his interests, in addition to contributing to the recovery of historical memory through his artistic practice.

In his project, Galeano proposes three ways of approaching the sky through photography: the physical, the metaphysical and the digital. ”

Article by Roberta Bosco in EL PAÍS on ARCOmadrid 2021

Below we show you the article Arco, the kingdom of women, by Roberta Bosco in El País on July 12, 2021, where she refers to the RocioSantaCruz stand.

Rocío Santacruz dedicated her special project to Mar Arza, who intervenes old books turning them into rare objects and who presented a large installation in homage to the Chalk Cabinet of the Basque sculptor Jorge Oteiza. Santacruz also exhibited two audiovisual reinterpretations of the still life in a technological and hyper-realistic key by Marina Núñez, awarded the ARCO-Beep Prize for Electronic Art, which thus became part of this Catalan collection. Colita’s photographs, revealed by her in the 60s and 70s, completed a proposal presided over by the portraits of the 44 artists of the Bauhaus (defined with contempt “the weavers” by the machismo of the European avant-garde), gathered in a mural of 10 meters by Gonzalo Elvira.

Interview with Gonzalo Elvira for the 2020 City of Palma Antoni Gelabert Prize for Visual Arts

The artist Gonzalo Elvira (Patagonia, Argentina, 1971) has been awarded the Ciutat de Palma Antoni Gelabert Award for Visual Arts 2020 for his Dream installation. Former recipients of this award include artists such as N.ria G.ell and Carles Congost. From RocioSantaCruz, we celebrate with emotion the recognition of Elvira, whose vision and sensitivity are a reference in the field of artistic creation.Elvira traces a journey through the ignote cartography of the dream.Somnis rescues stories of the fog, of this thick, infinite fog that is the unconscious. The artist took as his starting point the illustrations that Grete Stern, a German photographer, a member of the Bauhaus and exiled in Argentina, created for the magazine Idilli. The publication offered his readers a psychological consulting exercise of dream interpretation. The section soon became a sort of surrealist archive, a repository of mobs, desires, and contradictions, to which Stern accompanied with enigmatic illustrations. He would resurrect the voices of these women, he plunged into a maze of alien fears and longings to give them a new life. His compositions not only reflect the distorted reality of these stories, but give them new meanings, mixing the past and the present, the dream and the reality, the stroke and the word. In his own words, Dreams allows a “movement to certain phenomena that have recently taken place in the reality of the world that we’re living in.”The artist strips the illustrations of his original context and reproduces them on ancient maps: the woman who looks to the sky in “Ambition Dreams”, sitting on the American East; the woman who moves on to the palpentas in “The Geometry Dreams”, opening her way through Western Europe. In each image, a contained story, a voice that crosses time and space. For each of them, a piece of world.

ARCO E-xhibition: Jean Denant

Visit the virtual booth

Complete catalogue of works

On the fence

The ARCOmadrid E-xhibition is presented as a virtual space, a kind of psychic representation that allows Jean Denant (Sète, France, 1979) to inscribe a mental cartography of his research.

La Traversée, a border work that separates the real from the imaginary, conscious and unconscious, represents a map of the Mediterranean in a polished stainless steel mirror, embedded in the wall, a living work that feeds and evolves with the passage of light and look.

Border between two worlds, La Traversée is the representation of reality that accompanies the archaeological traces of the artist’s passage, like men in the course of time.

Memory of exchanges in its waters, where Gauls and Romans were already fighting for the borders, a necklace of amphora rubble reminds us of the memory of exchanges between men found at the bottom of the seas.

Greek heroes have also passed through it and left their mark. The necklace of this Giant, as a vestige of mythological tales, tells us that it is in this geographical space where peoples mixed, shared their beliefs and invented their gods.

This Mediterranean, here presented as a continent, is also considered a border, sometimes as an insurmountable wall.

In Jean Denant’s work, everything is a question of construction and deconstruction, as in the Anarchitecture works that he also presents. This place, at the same time an intimate landscape that is being built and a real landscape that is being made, comes to set our gaze once again on the border, the passage from one state to another.

Like these drawings of landscapes in Palestine, the cradle of our civilization, drawings painted in cement on paper, which constitute the series États limites, in reference to this psychic organization “between two waters”, between neurosis and psychosis, which allows us to link this universal landscape, the center of our civilization, and an intimate landscape.

Jean Denant navigates between two waters in an attempt to express the fragility of the border issue, both physical and psychological, from a universal and at the same time unique point of view.
